Just six months after releasing their cosmic Americana opus “Delusions of Paradise” on Chicago label Fine Prints, Dogs at Large have swapped their slide guitars for saxophones, and have seemingly logged some hours at a local riverboat casino. These experiences are reflected clearly in the two powerfully swaggering songs that make up their new single “Sweet Talkin’ / Chosen Ones.” Guitarist Jamie Yanda slicks his hair back and supplies his sleaziest guitar lines yet, sharing the spotlight more than ever with Sam Pirruccello’s confident vocals. The band sounds more alive and self assured than ever before. They come together as a cohesive machine to balance sticky hard-rock hooks with hip shaking rhythms, and even a polyphonic keyboard shows up to perform a hypnotic bleepy-bloop during the breakdown of “Sweet Talkin'”. This is music to groove to while pressed up against a slot machine. Slip in a coin and pull the lever - that's a jackpot.
